AUTHOR’S NOTE: There is mention of Sterling from Wicked Chances and Thaddeus from Dreams of Reality in this book and you know already know Tyler from Black’s Innocence so have fun with that if you haven’t read them. And if you have, did you leave a review? Please and thank you!

I know… I KNOW! He’s going to use her just like everyone else has, and it could all blow up in his face.

Does he deserve it? He probably does. Should she forgive him?

That’s the scary part. I think we all take chances in love and lust in life, but when do you put her foot down and say, this is not going to happen to me anymore?

She’s been through the worst, and sometimes we’ve all been in that situation and wondered when it will get better.

I can’t answer that question right now for Iris or for you. Hell, I can barely answer it for myself, but we can all hope and have faith someone is looking out for our happiness, and this too shall pass… let’s just hope it doesn’t pass like a gallstone, though, because those hurt.

Enjoy… your author, Sylvia Hubbard.

When El woke from a mid-evening nap, he immediately checked Iris’s location. Seeing she would arrive in a couple of hours, he calmed himself.

The anxiousness was new for him. Yes, he loved being involved, but he assumed one night with Iris would quell this desire for her despite the growing need to protect her. And it had nothing to do with her working for him. This feeling was more than protectiveness and selfishness. He couldn’t explain the feeling and hated it, yet he wanted to dive in head first and enjoy feeling like this.

El didn’t like the confusion of his emotional state when it came to her and also knowing nothing would satisfy him until she was in his arms where he could hold her, kiss her, and make love to her until she squealed happily.

It was a shocker to El that she single-handedly got these charges dropped before Tyler Black arrived at the office to investigate.

“You better keep her forever because you seem to get yourself in harrowing situations, El,” Tyler teased on the phone. “The distinct attorney is looking at the rest of the evidence she provided and her testimony and will give me a call by tonight. You better give her the red carpet treatment when it’s time for a bonus. She saved your ass supremely.”

El agreed, but only to himself. “I still have to figure out what to do about the Bellinis. I met with them this morning, and honestly, even with the charges dropped, this has really put me in a bind. I want to drive back to Detroit and do some damage on Russell Wexford’s face and perhaps Ernest as well.”

“You have nothing up your sleeve?” Tyler asked, stunned.

“In terms of bargaining? No.” He didn’t admit Iris’s report had helped tremendously, providing him with information he hadn’t known about the family and future endeavors that would be favorable to them, which had driven their move to the city. In the morning meeting, sometimes he found himself quoting her report word for word and had gotten favor but nothing in agreement due to the severity of the degradation to his character the media had portrayed.

Detroit had vast amounts of property owned for decadesβ€”hell, almost centuriesβ€”and all the other property was quickly snatched up by anyone and everyone who saw the city as the jewel it would be in a couple of years when it was deep in bankruptcy.

At that time, El had not been in the city. He’d been getting himself out of trouble that Blaque mixed him up in New York.

Property was the only thing the Bellinis were interested in, but there needed to be a way for him to obtain a large piece of property in Detroit in less than twenty-four hours.

“You could sue both of them and that bitch Sharlie Costello for this,” Tyler suggested.

“It wouldn’t satisfy my bloodlust, and it still wouldn’t help me keep this deal on the table with the Bellinis in time.”

“Fates been on your side lately,” Tyler said hopefully.

El surmised that fate had intervened only because of Iris, but he wouldn’t admit this out loud.

She had saved him in more ways than one, and that thought made him think about his other problemβ€”a way to keep her.

“Wasn’t there something in our papers if she became pregnant?” he asked Tyler.

“They don’t call me the best contract lawyer for nothing, El. If pregnancy happens, she agreed to proceed with the pregnancy, but you would get custody of the child unless marriage occurs.” Tyler snorted. “And we know that would never happen.”

El glossed over her email, which he’d read repeatedly before this phone call with the lawyer. Initially, he sought a tender word from her, not this business voice. How could she be in control and not be consumed by the passionate night they’d had? Any other woman he’d had usually forgot themselves and couldn’t speak about anything else. He was impressed by how Iris could compartmentalize her emotions.

Immediately knowing she’d broken her phone and Salacious possessed the device, it was a blessing and curse if it did have the information needed to get El off the false charges. Yet, the phone he’d given Iris had contacts and apps that connected her accounts to his.

Until Tyler solidified the charges were dropped altogether, El didn’t want a way for anyone to be able to find him.

On his laptop, El could log off most apps from her phone, so Salacious couldn’t log into them and get El or his business. Since he knew how to sign into her cellphone, El could also initiate a cloud download from her phone, but it would take several hours for him to access the information.

Calling her through his vehicle would ding his phone, and El wanted to avoid alerting any police agency to pinpoint his exact location. Once he arrived in Chicago, he’d only used his hotel’s phone until he could get a burner phone, putting his phone into a protective pouch so no one could track where he was.

Instead of trying to hear her voice, which he wanted to, he used the apps in his vehicle to take over the screen and send her his location, hoping she understood the assignment. He could also log into his vehicle’s GPS and watch her get on the road towards Chicago.

From what El determined from the email Iris had sent, Ernest Washington and Russell Wexford were behind this. But who helped get the story to the press so fast? Who would have been able to manipulate the media so fast that no one would question the video and immediately have the public implicate him?

Also, the depth of this evilness could only signify a deep hate for him, but he was sure Ernest was only sore about missing an opportunity with El, and he wasn’t smart enough to devise a plan like this. Yes, he had done some awful things in his life. His cold attitude due to his condition and persistence in keeping people away made many dislike him, but it was for their protection. Further thinking, El could only surmise one person who was devious enough, clever enough and had the perfect reason to do something – his sister.

Ola had her reasons because El took his father’s company from her and then made it into something successful – better than she had done. Still, there was a provision she had insisted on putting in that if the company failed, everything would revert to her.

The company could fail if he were imprisoned and charged with a serious crime.

“Will you be getting the phone and gun returned as soon as possible?” El asked the lawyer.

Tyler answered, “I’ve submitted the necessary form to have those items returned to you, and any information they find other than what was designated for this case is not to be used or kept. And you told me to investigate your soon-to-be brother-in-law, right? I’m uploading what I found, and I’ll send the cloud link to your email. Go through it with a fine-tooth comb because things don’t smell right, but I can’t put my finger on it.”

El would also have Iris look it over because her attention to detail was impeccable.

You’re depending on her too much; his brain reprimanded him.

“Why are you asking about pregnancy?” Tyler inquired. “You didn’t do anything stupid, did you?”

“Not yet, but -“

Tyler cut him off. “El, I know I said she was a keeper, but not like that. I’m not trying to tell you what to do, but she has a kid. Due to my finesse, her divorce will only be final as of tomorrow. You’ve got to be crazy to get her pregnant and not think you’re going to do more damage to her than what you’re already doing.”

El snorted, affronted, “Already doing, Tyler?”

“Don’t act like the mental capacity to deal with you in person is not a massive load on one’s sanity. And for gawd sake, man, you bargain her like a piece of property with her husband?! You don’t think something was wrong with that?”

“It was only to go down to that asshole’s level to get her to work for me,” El tried to justify. Hearing the truth out loud stung, and he almost worried about how Iris could deal with him. “It’s just a thought in my attempt to keep her around.”

“If money won’t keep her, let her go. There are always more.”

If it were anyone else, El would agree, but this was Iris Folsom! IRIS!

His phone chirped to remind him of her ETA, and he shifted uncomfortably. He was grateful he was only on a phone call, so Tyler couldn’t see the agonizing thoughts running through his mind.

“Will you be able to meet with the Bellini’s again?” Tyler questioned.

El was elated that the subject moved away from Iris. “I convinced Alejandro Bellini to meet with me tomorrow morning at seven. Dalton was through with the conversation, but Alejandro does run their hostelry division. If I could get in with him, I’m sure the rest should be easy and peasy.”

“That’s an edge, but what could you offer if nothing is available?”

“I haven’t thought that far.”

“Well, I’m sure your partner is trying for something, but I could strike a line with Sterling Newmann. He’s looking to expand more with his private community, The Charlotte, and might need investment, as well as his brother Thaddeus, who always works with various real estate companies.”

“Wait, Sterling and Thaddeus are siblings? Sterling is white, and Thaddeus is black.”

“Thaddeus’s parents adopted Sterling.”

He snorted in shock. “I thought I was the only anomaly in Detroit.”

“You’re not. And you’re light-skinned, not white, El.”

“I know fully what I am, but I was referring to unique… never mind. That still doesn’t give me something concrete, but put the feelers out and let me know.”

“And if nothing comes by seven-“

El cut the lawyer off sourly, “I’m not thinking that far. Right now, I need to get ready. Iris is arriving.”

“Heed my warning about that woman. I don’t trust her personally. You completely stole her from her husband, and as far as we’ve seen, she’s only given loyalty to her father. She wants to run away or do his bidding, and there’s no way to control years of piety. You don’t know if she’s doing this to bide her time and will stick a knife in your back.”

“So why have you helped me?”

“I’m a perverted ass. I like watching the Titanic sink. Just be careful,” Tyler warned. “And I’ll let you know if I get anything to help you with the Bellini. You do understand if this fails, you’ll lose everything. Your company will fail, and all assets will revert to your sister.”

Irritated, El sneered, “I know this.”

“And you realize she could give everything to Russell for any amount just to get her hands on some money, and everything you worked to get from him will be all for nothing? He’ll win. You’ll lose.”

“Are you trying to cheer me up or rub salt in the wound?”

“Both.” Tyler released the call.

El checked Iris’s ETA and couldn’t help but smile. A feeling of excitement shot through him, and his body seemed to vibrate at the eagerness to see her again. He was ready to see her, and ignoring Tyler’s warnings, El would do whatever he had to do to keep Iris close.

Just the thought of burying himself into her, feeling her juices coat him and then her body undulating under him as she reveled in pleasure, made his manhood twitch and harden.

Didn’t the saying go, keep your enemy close and your enemies closer?

If Iris was working with her father and, in turn, was some sick stab in the back from Ruseell, then at least El could be close enough to see it coming, but until then, he’d enjoy the ride.

However, he still had a contingency plan. It was why people hired him; he’d be a fool not to use this on himself.
