In my new series going from September to October, I want to discuss unpopular opinions I’ve had about my literary life.
I’ve made them into 3rd person, because I felt perhaps this is a lot of general opinions other than just mine. I like to say the things other people are afraid to speak about but these are opinions I’ve had.
Let me know what you feel about it.
The entire indie author community is obsessed with five-star reviews and reader happiness. Sylvia’s unpopular take: the best reviews she’s ever received weren’t five stars — they were the ones where someone said “I wanted to throw my phone” or “I was hiding in my work bathroom to finish this.” Discomfort, frustration, devastation — those are reader experiences too. A book that makes someone feel nothing is the only failure. A book that makes someone angry means it landed.
