About the story:

A promotional image featuring a young woman reading on a couch, with a storyline description about a grocery worker named Spencer who becomes a 'substitute wife' for a dying woman's husband, exploring themes of loyalty and desire.

Now you know anything about my stories, what you read in the synopsis is much larger than what you think is going to happen, but here is the excerpt:

Spencer stared at her backpack, silently pleading as she glanced at the eyes fixed on Ramona. Please don’t. Please don’t.

Ramona’s finger lifted—and pointed at Spencer. “She can.”

Marcus snorted, looking down at her. “She barely has a GED. Are you joking, or do you want to be fired?”

“No,” Spencer said, standing abruptly as her bag dropped. “She can’t be fired.” She walked to the desk, standing beside Ramona, never taking her eyes off Marques. Of course, she wasn’t about to reveal to the whole room that they’d just made an agreement. The check still lying there solidified their agreement, and he couldn’t break it. But she had to get herself together to help Ramona yet again.

A tense meeting in an office setting showing three individuals: a woman with curly hair and a backpack confronting a well-dressed man, while another woman in a green suit appears to be making a point in the background. The phrase 'She can.' is featured prominently.

Why I wrote this scene and how it moves the story:

I needed a scene to bring Spencer into the light, only because she hides from it. I also wanted to have a point in the story where the reader understands that Spencer was willing to set aside her fears for her friends with Ramona. Admirable or Sad? I let the reader decide. But in this scene, you find that Spencer isn’t as dumb as people think, and even though it wasn’t her intention to show off her intelligence, it gives the audience a great way to see more of this main character and bring her off the page.

Read Spencer’s turning‑point moment in full. This scene is the first crack in her armor—where fear collides with loyalty, and the truth she’s been hiding starts to surface.
