Chapter 10.2

Her lips felt like they weighed a ton. What was she suppose to say?

The door to Sloan’s room opened and Armando came out.

“Well, hello, Pholsom.” The lawyer’s tone of voice held a lot of animosity familiarity, but Elena was just glad for the minor distraction while she worked up the courage to tell Pholsom the truth.

“Haven’t seen you around in a while,” Armando said, standing between them and extending his hand out to Pholsom.

Pholsom had to change the ring he held in his other hand and let go of his grip of Elena in order to accept the handshake.

“How’s the old man?” Pholsom asked.

“He’s doing fine. It was shaky waters today, but with people like Elena around, I think he’ll do just fine.” He noticed the ring in Pholsom’s hand.

Elena took that moment and snatched the ring back from Pholsom. To get the subject off of her because she needed more time, she asked, “How do you two know each other?”

Both men looked at her as if that should be obvious.

“We’ve done business together and I’ve handled things for Pholsom’s family for a very long while; Almost since I graduated from college. Pholsom’s business attorney is my law partner.”

“Don’t change the subject, Elena,” Pholsom said seriously. “What do you need to tell me?”

“I don’t think we need to talk about this now, Pholsom.”

“We can talk in front of Armando about anything. He’s my family lawyer.”

Armando looked at his watch. “Unless you’re paying me, Pho, I have other things to attend to.”

“We can talk about it later,” she insisted.

“We can talk about that ring now and why you’re wearing it today, when you weren’t wearing it yesterday or this morning,” Pholsom insisted.

“Pholsom, calm down,” Armando insisted. “I think Elena can easily explain this.” He opened the door to Sloan’s room to invite both of them back in. “Right Elena?”

Talk about putting her on the spot. She nodded and walked in. Pholsom followed right behind them.

Sloan was sleep and she kept her voice low so she wouldn’t disturb him. Her stomach was doing Olympic size double flip backs with a twist repeatedly as she wrung her fingers in anticipation of knowing she would have to explain things to Pholsom.

“I’ve agreed to marry Mr. Bradshaw, Pholsom. He asked me this afternoon and I said yes.”

Pholsom tightened, relaxed and then tightened again.

“Pholsom,” Armando said. “Use your words.”

Shut the fuck up, Armando! You’ve mistaked me for-“

“Wait a minute,” Elena said before their voices became too raised.

Surprisingly both men were also keeping their voice down, but she wanted to keep it that way, so she needed to explain herself to Pholsom as fast as possible. “I was going to call you as soon as I agreed to explain to you the details as to why I’m marrying him, but I became busy and I never had the time.”

“You don’t need to explain yourself to him, Elena. He fully understands. He’s just bothered it’s you, aren’t you, Pholsom? Please explain everything to the woman before she passes out,” Armando ordered Pholsom.

Obviously, Armando knew Pholsom very well because Pholsom’s looked apologetic to her.

He even grasped her hand tenderly and said, “I’m just in a bit of a turmoil. Was this why you couldn’t accept my job offer so soon?”

“Actually, no. I mean…” At this point she was extremely frustrated. Did he just accept her excuse, her marriage and not think twice about it? He didn’t even ask why or how! “I was going to accept your job offer-“

She didn’t finish that before he drew her in his arms and hugged her tightly.

What the hell was going on?!

Pushing away from him, she said, “You don’t care that I’m marrying Mr. Bradshaw?”

“I care, but that doesn’t mean you can’t accept the position, right?” Pholsom asked worriedly. “He’ll have his own professional nurse once he gets home and you won’t be required to wait on him hand and foot.”

“The job means more to you than us?”

“What us?” Armando asked.

“Could you butt out, Armando?” Pholsom sneered.

Armando rolled his olive green eyes. “First you wanted me to stay.”

“You can stay. Just be quiet.”

“Pholsom! Answer my question,” she said impatiently.

“Elena you mean a lot to me. I’m very much attracted to you, but this is important and I don’t mix business with pleasure.”

“He means he’s an insensitive brute who although probably is sporting a chubby for you, acclimates more to business than he does to personal relationships,” Armando interpreted.

She stepped completely away from the both of them and looked appalled by Armando’s explanation and the feeling that it was completely true.

“Thank you, Armando. Especially when I told you to shut the fuck up,” Pholsom sneered.

“Just doing my job as your lawyer and making sure she understands what’s being laid out. You’re more complicated than a law brief.” Armando looked at Elena. “Sloan did say you could have a discreet relationship, and I’m sure this complication will mean nothing to Sloan, because it certainly doesn’t mean much to Pholsom that you’re marrying his uncle.”

“What?!” she screeched.

Pholsom leaped over to her and covered her mouth.

  1. Hey Sylvia! I just finished 10.2 & 10.3!! This is amazing. Is he the one she kissed in Sloan’s house when she was younger? I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

  2. Oh I love it! I wad wondering how Pholsom and Mr. Bradshaw would be related.

Oh and Sylvia, I thought I had read everything. How did I miss The Other Side of Love? I really would love to read it.
