good morning.

Author’s Note: I spent the weekend using the other side of my brain for all my social media talks.

It was hard to jump into the other side of my brain to work on the story, even though I knew my brain was working it out.

But I’m back and stayed up all morning hacking out this and more to come for the afternoon.

spoiler alert: guess who’s coming to make even more trouble for Elena… Onyx Heart.

And brush up on Jona, from Hope Is Love too. She’ll make a small appearance as well.

Chapter 9

“Your son?” she asked to be sure. Yet not wanting to confess she had snuck in his home, she quickly recovered from her shock. “I don’t … I mean I wasn’t sure you had offspring.”

Yes, he was in the house. I thought the two of you met. I mean he acted as if you had met.” He looked a little bothered.

“He told you we met?”

“I found out several years later when he saw I was inquiring about you with my lawyer one day. He wanted to know if you were still there and that’s when I found out you two had somehow met briefly but he would never go into what, where or even how you two met. Should I be worried? Did he hurt you? He can be upsetting sometimes.”

“Upsetting?”

“He… well, it’s a long explanation, but he’s very good at handling his mother. Much better than I am and I can have the two of you meet after our marriage.”

“He… He’ll approve of this? I mean, he’ll be upset that I married you. I’m younger than he, right?”

“He’ll actually be happy because then he knows my wishes to not let his mother have the inheritance money. I hope you see my need to keep it away from her.”

“But won’t he be upset he’s not getting any of the money.”

“He’s gotten his share already. Phoenix isn’t a greedy man. He was hoping I find someone soon to stop the original agreement and prevent his mother from taking the money.”

The way his face looked was so full of hope, but she was so worried and then with this new circumstance…  How was she supposed to be married to the father knowing she could possibly still be attracted to the son?

And there was still Pholsom Todd!

There was a knock on the door and her stomach clenched.

To her relief it was the previous nurse with a paper bag. “This was just delivered by Dr. Jefferson. He said it was to be given directly to you and the messenger would wait until you returned it.”

She opened the bag and looked inside. Chance had delivered the items she needed for a urine test and then documents for lab work. “Thanks. Tell the messenger I’ll bring them out in a moment.”

When the nurse was gone, she turned to Sloan. “Just give me a minute.”

He nodded in understanding.

Elena ducked in his bathroom and quickly handled the matter for Chance, washing up afterwards. When she was done, she peeked into the hallway to make sure the coast was “Lori” clear before just walking out.

The messenger took the bag with the urine test and she put the lab papers in her pocket to go down later.

When she went back in the room, she saw Sloan’s eyes were closed and he looked perfectly asleep. Maybe she had time to give herself a moment to think about everything.

Just as she was about to turn around and leave out the room, Sloan’s deep voice said, “I’m still waiting for your decision, Elena.”

Elena turned from the door and looked at the older man in the bed. “Does my decision prevent me from seeing my father’s information? The things you found out about him?”

“I would never prevent you from having that information, Elena. I would show everything to you whether you agree to marry me or not.”

She came back over to the bed endeared this man had known her for so long and had always tried to be in her life without really being there. How could she have not tried harder to find him sooner?

Both of them had been through the gambit and Sloan Bradshaw was willing to help her when she knew no one would be able to help her.

Taking his hand again and sitting on the bed next to him, she said, “Once I read over the information, Sloan, and see that you are helping me save my father’s legacy, I would very happy to marry you to also help you out too.”

He kissed her knuckles again and smile. “You have made me a very very happy old man, Elena. Thank you. I’ll call my lawyer right away. Now I know you have something else to do. I saw that lab paper you put in your pocket.”

She looked down at the paper sticking out of her pocket. “I guess I should tell you about this.”

“You will tell me in your own time.”

In the end, she would much rather tell him now and start from the beginning. “I’ve been asked to work somewhere else. It’s a great opportunity.”

He looked alarmed. “Really? Where?”

“For a geriatric center here in Metro Detroit.”

His look of panic turned to a look of relief.

She continued, “I want to accept the opportunity.”

“Then do so,” he encouraged.

“But I slept with my boss… well, my boss-to-be. On top of that I did something that was stupid by having unprotected sex with him.”

He frowned in disapproval, but didn’t chastise her about her mistake. “And that’s why you’re having the blood test?”

“Yes, and I’m running some tests just to make sure everything is alright.”

“Good,” he said with support. “I can have my lawyer here tonight to draw up the papers for our arrangement.”

This was happening very fast and she could feel her stomach clench a little. “I’ll be back. My shift begins soon.”

He smiled and she could see the tiredness in his eyes.

“We will talk later,” he promised.

She rose up and left the room. Leaning against the wall outside his room, she waited until her stomach muscles relaxed before she started for the elevator, very glad she didn’t have to encounter Lori.
