Writing question of the month: What’s the first impression I’d want to give readers?
When I start a story, I want the readers to really not like my characters. I want them to be angry because of the decisions these characters have made to get themselves into predicaments. Call them foolish, but then realize everyone makes mistakes, and one should not be judged for it. Unfortunately, their initial bad decisions are not what make the story. It’s the journey they go on because of these decisions. I need my readers to see how far empathy can take them until they understand it’s not the destination, but the journey that makes a character great, and they need to go on the journey with my reader.
