Author’s Notes:

It’s rolling out my head faster than I can type. I want to catch you up but there is so many details I don’t want to miss so bare with me as I pump three more chapters out this week and thank you all for your support to my literary endeavors

this note is short and sweet and since we’re going up the SHTF moment I won’t reveal a lot of things and just let you read and comment. Let me know how do you thin this will all be figured out. I’d love to hear what you have to say.

I’m listening.

Your author, Sylvia Hubbard

Another nurse rushed over, arguing with Russell Wexford to put out his cigar, and he argued back with his need to smoke due to his son’s condition. This at least gave Iris time to gather herself and push all the bad memories and what she knew happened to her out of her mind so she could get herself together.

The floor nurse argued, “Then you’ll leave this building because there’s no smoking anywhere in this hospital.”

“Come on,” Essence urged Iris. “That’s just the supervising floor nurse trying to maintain order.” Her cousin guided her to a small changing room and handed Iris a CNA garment, seeing that Iris couldn’t follow. “You certainly don’t like that man, but as arrogant as he is, I can understand.”

“There’s just too much,” Iris said, shuddering.

Pointing to where Iris could change, Essence said, “You can wear this so no one will suspect anything as you enter the rooms.”

Iris quickly changed while Essence talked.

“You must really love your boss or your job. What’s this business?”

Iris was just grateful Essence didn’t push about the history of Russell Wexford. Who would believe her father had drugged her and forced her to have sex with that malicous man! “My boss beat up Damien, but he didn’t do the damage that the medical report said he did. I was there. I saw what happened.” She stepped from behind a curtain she had been changing and said, “El… Mr. Olorun didn’t do that.” Letting Essence believe there was a professional mindset about her boss would help with her cousin not asking too many personal questions.

Essence surmised as she put together a patient tray, “And finding the truth will help you keep a job because your boss won’t go to jail?”

“Right,” Iris answered, receiving the tray Essence handed her.

They walked out of the room, and Essence went a long way around the floor to get to the room where Damien was. A police officer was placed outside his door, but with Iris in hospital employee garb, he didn’t look suspicious as she followed Essence into the room.

“I don’t know how much time we have with him, but we need to check all his wounds,” Essence said, pulling the curtains around them.

Iris looked at the bed and gasped. Damien’s face was swollen, and then there was a drain coming from the side of his head, along with an open gash in his face. There was another drain coming from the side of his chest, and she saw there punctures and defensive wounds all over his arms.

“Someone used a weapon,” she said instantly, pulling her forensic education.

“You’re right,” Essence agreed, inspecting Damien’s chest and arms closely. “A large weapon and… one person didn’t do this. The police should know this just by his record.”

“Unless someone doesn’t want the police to know,” she said, remembering the hate in Salacious’s eyes. A certain cop probably needs the cops looking for my boss because he has it in for him.”

“We’re looking for a heavy object with a blunt end made to look like a large fist originally, but the brutality of this attack on him was murderous. They were trying to kill him, not just beat him up.”

Iris looked closely at the defensive marks up and down Damien’s arms. “My boss didn’t do this. Damien didn’t fight when El attacked him. He was complacent because of his guilt.” She stopped herself, remembering the revelation Damien had given her before El stepped in and got her out of that room.

Essence tenderly touched Iris’s shoulder to pull her back to the present. “I believe you, Iris, but now we should figure out who can get this information to help your boss.”

Her cousin was right, but the only person she knew was the man who she felt was against El. Pulling out her Salacious card, she went to the room’s phone and called the number. Essence came over and leaned over to listen.

“Who is this?” Salacious demanded.

“Iris Folsom, El’s-“

He cut her off. “I know who the fuck you are. Why are you bothering me?”

“I found information about Damien’s bruises.”

“How would you know when I haven’t seen the forensic report yet?”

“Because I snuck in his room, but you’re just wasting time asking silly questions, or you aren’t serious about finding the truth about Damien Wexford’s injuries and discovering if El really beat this man in a coma.”

“I’m on my way. Meet me in the lobby, Ms. Folsom.” The line cut off.

“I’m texting my discoveries to you so you can properly explain it to him. Hopefully, with your information, he’ll put a rush on his forensic report.”

“Thank you, Essence.” Iris hugged her.

“No problem because the sooner you handle this business guy, the sooner we can go out for some food,” Essence said, going over to the tray Iris had brought into the room. “Now get out of here by going back around the same way and then accessing the stairs instead of the elevator.”

Iris hugged her one last time and then rushed out of the room, following their path around the floor to get to the door and down the stairs.

As soon as she stepped into the stairway, she heard a familiar voice on the level below her, which made her freeze in her tracks.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Russell sneered.

Backing into the corner of the platform she was standing on, she realized Russell wasn’t talking to her. Breathing a sigh of relief, she quickly dug out her phone and found the transcription app to record audio.

“To make sure you do your part of the bargain, Mr. Wexford.”

She wasn’t familiar with this voice and was terrified to look too much over the railing.

“Your presence here could jeopardize the plans,” Russell blustered. “And why did you need to bring her?” There was heavy disgust in his voice.

A silky, honey voice said, after a cackle, “Don’t act like your dick didn’t like this pussy, Russell.”

A disgusted snort and Russell said, “I’ve had much finer poontang than your raggedy ass, Ola.”

“Don’t talk about my wife like that, Russell. Just because you have the money doesn’t mean your lip can’t get flicked. I’m from the motherfucking streets, you nasty son of a bitch, and I just keep appearances. Now, will you hold up your end of the bargain and get me a seat with the Bellini’s?”

“Relax,” Russell said. “I got it all planned out. They’re coming on Thursday morning. They just informed me they canceled the meeting with El this morning and will meet with me when they arrive. They’ll be putty in my hands as long as you make it so they can get the property they want.”

The unfamiliar man said crudely, “I told you. I got my people kicking out residents left and right. We’re ready to take over this whole city with the Bellini’s money. And where’s the rest of your bargain, Russell?”

“Here’s half of the money I promised.”

Iris heard something paper rustling.

Russell said, “And the other half will come when I get all the deeds to the properties you promised.”

“You’ll get them,” Ola said. “Right under my brother’s nose. When I sold him the other part of our family’s business, there was a contingency that if he goes to jail or dies, and he’s not married, I get everything.”

“El will be in jail after what we did to your son,” the unfamiliar man cackled.

“You didn’t fucking have to put him in a coma, dammit!!” Russell barked.

“If I didn’t, that smart-ass attorney would have dug around easily and gotten the charges dropped over a little scuffle. It was the best opportunity to make sure we can throw El in prison and never have to see his fucking triumphant face again.”

Her phone suddenly chirped because Salacious had missed a call. The sound reverberated like a loud echo through the stairwell. Iris gasped, running out and back on the floor. Calming herself, she walked through the crowd of people, not looking back, and then made it to the elevator.

“Hey you!” Russell barked.

The doors to the elevator opened, and she walked in, everyone else turning to see Russell coming to her with another man and woman behind him. However, the doors closed just in time.

Was that the councilman? Was that El’s sister? A chill swept over her, and she put on her coat and gripped her purse over her shoulder while holding the phone tightly in her hands. She texted the cop to let him know she was coming down now.

Iris pushed the audio file and the transcription up to her cloud while waiting for the elevator to take her to the lobby.

As soon as the doors opened, Iris rushed out and looked frantically for the cop. His tall, large body with those soulless black eyes was immediately seen, but just as she headed in his direction, a hand came over her mouth, lifted her body, and dragged her around a corner.

No! No! Nooooo! Iris tensed up and started to fight. Why here?! Why now?

“Be fucking still,” she heard Dwayne churl, and a cold blade was pressed against her neck.
