Author’s Note: This was a difficult part of the story because I knew I had to face what had been done to Iris and I needed myself to be strong so I could think straight for everyone. I hate it when you reveal the horrible things that are done and the main character has not reaction to it – or decent reaction to it. I wanted Iris to get all her questions answered but also deal with that injustice internally as well.

After you read this, I’d love to know your thoughts.

Damien sounded as if he had to force each word out of his body, as if he was still fighting with his conscience. “I went with him. I didn’t know what to expect, but all the while, he was talking in the car, saying how he’d been with your Momma for years and years and revealed the truth about Violet. That she was his kid, and now I would have the same opportunity with some good pussy. He laughed about how Arum was only weak enough to make dead babies inside her good pussy. He also said how he was using Arum, who would lick the ground my father walked on for a chance to be even a little like him. And my father confessed he was using Arum’s chemist skills to drug his wife so my father could fuck her whenever he liked. Now, it was my chance.”

Iris gasped, feeling queasy. “And that’s what he was taking you to do?”

Since his glass was empty, all he could do was turn it around in his hands to help him stop shaking. “Trust me, I thought the same thing, but it was worse. We went to the White House, and Dad told me to get on that couch and pull my pants down. He said that night was going to be a party for everyone. And that he wasn’t going to keep good pussy to himself anymore.” He closed his eyes and slowly shook his head back and forth as if trying to get whatever thoughts were running through his brain he was trying to shake them out of there. After taking a deep, shaky breath, he said, “Everyone else started unbuckling their pants like they had been waiting for this moment for a long time. I heard him and Arum mumbling like they were arguing, and then my dad momentarily left the room. When he returned, you were with him. I could see the glass look in your eyes.”

He didn’t stop talking, but she knew he saw the horrified look on her face because his words faltered a bit. “And your dad commanded you to take off your clothes. You did it without hesitation, like you were under a spell right before everyone. And then Arum told you to go to the couch and… sit on me.”

Iris rolled her eyes around to keep tears from coming down her cheek as she connected that night, which was in her memory when all this had happened. “My father?” she asked.

“Yeah, you were under a spell, and you did what he said and… it was my first time, and you were…”

“Are you trying to excuse what you did to me, Damien?”

He shook his head quickly. “I’d seen you hanging out around my place when your dad visited. I was young and had never been with a girl. I wasn’t even into her before I knew about Violet being my sister, even though she followed me all around. I don’t think Violet was that into me, but she wanted an escape from your dad because he always made her do all the chores.”

“Did she tell you that?” Iris asked, insulted. “Violet always did the clothes and cooking while I cleaned the house. My father demanded that and would never let us switch up.”

He stayed on the subject and admitted, “I was into you, Iris.” His eyes flashed over Iris, admiring what he was looking over. “I thought you were pretty and kind, and here you were giving your virginity to me, so I took it.” He sobbed, caving in emotional pain and guilt. “I couldn’t stop myself until it was over, and I begged my father not to share you. I begged with everything I had, not because I felt bad but because I wanted you for myself. I didn’t understand it, Iris. Perhaps you inherited something just as sweet as your mother, or I wanted to be so much like my father, but I wanted to possess you all for myself. My father listened, and your father told you to get dressed and return downstairs. You did.”

Her memory was brief and foggy, but Iris could feel her brain connecting to what he said. The fear, doubt, and anger filling her scared her.

Iris knew being alone with Damien was unsafe and glanced at the door, wondering if it was locked. There may have been better ideas than getting on the elevator and being alone with Damien. She should have left the hotel altogether, but would that have been safe for her with her father or Blaque possibly out to hurt her?

Iris silently reprimanded herself. You should have stayed with El and dealt with your emotions in front of him. El was the only one looking out for her safety… at least for now.

Yet, Iris’s soul desperately needed to know the whole truth from Damien so she could piece together Violet’s diaries without burning them in the nearest fireplace before reading.

Keeping her cool once more and pushing away the gut instinct to run, Iris demanded to know, “Was that the only time?”

Damien’s eyes looked away, and he shot to his feet to go over to the bar. This time, he didn’t make himself a drink but grabbed the whole whiskey bottle before returning to her. After several gulps, he said, “Every weekend for a couple of months, my father took me to the White House again. He told me how proud he was of me. Each time, a piece of my soul broke away until all I could do was want you. I knew why my father was addicted to all of this. The power and feeling were so much, but you lose your humanity until nothing is left, and I knew if I kept this up, I’d be just like him, and you’d be… just like your mother. Still…” His eyes drifted to her lips, her chest, and then back to her eyes, and she saw a powerful look of lust fill him. “You had so much power over me, Iris, and it was so hard doing the right thing when it felt so good doing all the wrong things with you.” Shame filled his dark brown eyes, and he contemptuously snorted. “I actually thought I was doing you a favor by using a condom.”

Iris was sure he was starting to get too drunk to notice how tight with anger and shame she was sitting and how her fists were clenched while her teeth gnawed on the inside of her lower lip. It was becoming more and more difficult not to slap, kick, bite, and rip the skin off his body, scream curses, and shout until her voice was raw.

You need to hear him out! She continued telling herself, but Iris barely contained her rage with every passing second.

“When your mother died, my father came to tell me about it but then said, the following weekend, I’d be sharing you with him. I knew I had to protect you because if he touched you, there was no stopping him from making this draw out forever. So I went to your father and told him I’d pay him whatever he wanted – damn near my entire inheritance if he swore never to allow this to happen again, especially if he didn’t give you to my father. Arum said that it was too late.” Damien bravely looked at her with remorse. “My father had already tasted you without a condom at that, earlier that week, a couple of days before your mother passed away. I knew then I had to save you from him and me because this madness and evil would never stop.” He moved to his knees in front of her. “I honestly didn’t want to stop, Iris. I wanted you morning, noon, and night. Hell, it’s still hard after all these years to get you out of my system. I was like my father to your mother, obsessed over you. I was torn through morally, but I knew I had to find my humanity before I destroyed you like my father had destroyed your mother.”

Again, Iris looked at the door, but she did have her phone in her pocket, and all she would need was a good minute to get away and call for help. Who could she call?

Reluctance and dread filled her as she thought about the only person – El.

She remembered Damien’s apprehension earlier when he spoke about getting her alone away from El. Was El really that protective? Perhaps over someone he truly cared about, but that wasn’t the case with her.

Damien reached over and took her hands in his. “I won’t ask for your forgiveness because I don’t deserve it. I’ve turned my back on my family, given my father’s business to his enemies, and lived like I’ve lived to at least try to feel better, but I know nothing I could do to make up for what I’ve done to you, Iris. Yes, I am sorry, and I want you to know that from the bottom of my heart.”

His grip was tight, and she could yank her hands away if she wanted, but she didn’t want to distract him from his apologetic soliloquy until she could escape.

Iris asked, “You gave that business to El to show me how sorry you are?”

“I gave it to him because my father used El’s father’s vulnerabilities to take it, so I only did what was honest and gave it back.”

“Because you felt bad about what you had done to me,” she surmised. “When you saw me, you didn’t hesitate to do what El wanted.”

Damien lowered his head in shame. “Nothing I could give will ever make up for what I’ve done.”

She harshly said the obvious. “And that’s because I got pregnant!”

“The whole thing, Iris,” he responded hoarsely between the sobs racking his chest.

Iris could feel her anger quaking in her soul, wanting to punch him in his throat, but she knew she couldn’t hit him hard enough to knock him out. Where was a sledgehammer when she needed one?

“Was the baby alive when my father brought the body to you?” she demanded to know.

Damien shivered a sob. Tears ran down his deep brown eyes as he answered, “No. I had the body examined.”

For a moment, she was happy that she hadn’t lost her temper and run out of the room. “What were the results.”

“The baby never took a breath.”

So, her sister had been right, and that meant Iris needed to force herself to read through all those journals to discover the whole truth.

Damien continued, “I had the remains cremated and-“

The door to the room was kicked open, and El stood there in a rage, breathing as if a fire were about to shoot out his nostrils.
