For new readers, often I break up chapters because 1) I don’t want the reader to get too tired, 2) I put up what I have.
When I write it’s like watching a movie and I just type what I see until my brain decides to push pause.
You’re reading the end of Chapter 2 and I’m off to type Chapter 3.
Elena took the files and walked away from the desk. After making sure the new residence room would be in order when transport arrived, she finished the filing and then made sure she did her rounds.
Being around elderly people reminded her of those good days she had spent taking care of her mother. The only difference was the patients adored her, which Lori hated because it meant administration wanted to keep Elena around longer. Elena was not only one of the youngest permanent positions on the ward at twenty-eight, she was also the longest medical assistant that had latest this long on this floor. Turnover on the ward usually was from one day to three months. Elena had lasted almost six months.
It wasn’t something she was proud of. When Lori wasn’t around, Elena actually enjoyed her job. She had majored in Geriatric Administration because when she had been searching for some place to have her mother’s last days taken care of, she saw the diminished conditions of places that disappointed her. Maybe she could have put her mother anywhere and not cared, like her brother would have done, but for some reason, whenever she looked at her mother, she only thought that this was the woman her father had loved and he would have wanted her to be taken care of until her last breath.
Elena never regretted her decision to stop her own life, including the abortion, to make sure her mother had someone taking care of her until her dying day twenty-four/seven. She believed there had been true love between her parents, but her mother insecurities had driven her father to his suicide, yet Elena never hated her mother – Even when her mother’s neared the end and she was lucid, looking up at her daughter, the woman whispered, “I hate you weren’t a boy, Elena. Never fall for a handsome man. You’ll never be able to satisfy them.”
And then her last words were, “I loved your father so much.”
In one moment she hated her mother and then the next she loved and missed her mother. Elena remembered crying all night after leaving the funeral home where they had taken her mother.
Near of her shift, a patient had a mishap just as the surgical transport was bringing in Mr. Bradshaw. Elena excused herself before the new resident got settled in his room to change out her soaked clothes.
After washing up completely, she called for housekeeping where the mishap happed and then went to room twelve.
Checking his chart before entering the room, Elena saw a variety of problems including pulmonary edema commonly in elderly people. He had been rushed to surgical due to a filled lung. Patiently waiting for the surgical team to leave, she was glad Lori was gone for the day.
As she entered the room, she saw the secondary bed had been removed and Mr. Bradshaw’s bed was in the center of the room. The man was extraordinarily large for an elderly patient. She figured he was about six feet and a half and looked very robust, but she knew he had just had a lung drained. He had oxygen under his nose, and he looked asleep.
Her heart stopped as recognition dawned on her. Despite age and the oxygen hose around his face, she knew who exactly this man was. It was none other than Sloan Bradshaw, the lottery winning disappearing neighbor from next door.
